Everyone wants shiny things — except when it comes to wigs. While shine in hair typically means that your strands are healthy, too much shine just makes your crown of glory look unnatural. This is usually a problem people encounter with newly-minted wigs. Luckily, there are several steps you can take to reduce shine on synthetic hair and make it look more natural.
Without further ado, here are tips and tricks in improving the appearance of your wig:
Use dry shampoo.
Dry shampoo has the same effect on both your natural hair and your wig. It's the best weapon you have against shine. Just like with your real hair, dry shampoo can absorb the shine on wigs, but only if you use the right one.
There are many dry shampoos available on the market, and it's important that you use one that will work best for your wig. If your wig is a brunette shade, use one that's suited for brown-tinted hair. For blonde wigs, it only makes sense to use a dry shampoo that's formulated for blonde hair.
Now while dry shampoos zap the shine out of hair, it can also create unsightly residue just like any styling product. To prevent excessive build-up, it's best to only use dry shampoo to clean your wig after 8 to 10 wears.
Apply talcum or baby powder.
Talcum or baby powder is a great alternative to dry shampoo. However, applying this to your wig can quickly be a messy affair. To make the process as tidy as possible, use a powder puff or a cosmetic brush to apply the product. Once done, shake off the excess product and use a wide-tooth comb to spread it evenly across the strands.
Use dryer sheets.
You know the small pieces of fabric you toss into the dryer along with your laundry? Those can help reduce shine on wigs, too. But instead of simply wiping the strands with the sheet, you have to poke the bristles of a comb through it and work the comb through the wig in sections. While it may not be as effective as dry shampoo, it can do the job if you're under time pressure.
Apply apple cider vinegar.
Among all the tricks in reducing shine, this one is the least recommended as it tends to leave a funky smell on the synthetic hair. But it's useful in dialling down the shine in wigs and getting rid of the alkaline to keep it from itching.
If you want to give it a try, mix apple cider vinegar with water and submerge the wig entirely in it for about 20 minutes. After it gets a good soaking, rinse the hair with cold running water, and allow it to dry naturally.
Wait it out.
If you want to ensure that your wig won't get damaged, the best thing to do is just give it time and allow the shine to fade on its own. If you'd like to speed up the process, you can give the wig a wash a few times before wearing it. It may take a few washes to achieve the look you want, but it will happen eventually.
